THE TASK OF AN EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST
Specialized in dealing with child, adolescent and adult psychological developmental processes Educational Psychologists is mandated to assess, diagnose and intervene in order to facilitate the psychological adjustment and development of the person within the contexts of family, school, social or peer groups and communities. An Educational Psychologist is trained to approach the person and his world in its totality. Any hindrances / problems experienced on emotional, cognitive and behavioural level are addressed. For any problem to be effectively addressed its full context needs to be considered. It is therefore necessary to consult with the parents, the school, and other support services from time to time to adequately address these challenges/problems. A team approach is therefore often needed (collaboration between for example, parents, occupational therapists, speach therapists, teachers and other support services). All sessions and information remains strictly confidential and no information may be shared without the permission of the client. Educational Psychologists must at all times behave in an ethically responsible way towards the client.
HOW IS THE PROBLEM APPROACHED?
It is very important to assess / evaluate from the outset of the consultation process in order to create a more goal-orientated plan. Aspects that emerge during the assessment are used as focal points during therapy. During the therapy strengths/assets are highlighted and mobilized. In order to ensure purposeful therapeutic intervention one of the following approaches can be utilized: individual psychotherapy, parental guidance, and family therapy, learning support, classroom observation, consultation with the teacher, change facilitation and psycho-education. The client is engaged in the process and partakes in the design of the therapy plan.
